Appliances and fixtures can rust and corrode if they are not marine- or weather-rated. Rust weakens the equipment and looks bad, and by the time it is visible on the outside it has usually been working on the inside for a season - burner tubes, firebox panels, drawer slides and fasteners all rust from the inside out. Two things decide how fast this happens: the exposure the metal sits in, and whether the metal was rated for that exposure when it was specified. Here is what rust on an outdoor kitchen looks like at each stage, why it starts, what a licensed pro checks, and what the published numbers are for putting it right.
Where rust shows up first
- Burners and fireboxes. Bloom on a burner tube, a firebox panel that has gone flaky, or a burner that now runs hot on one side. This is the failure that shortens an appliance's life most directly.
- Hinges, fasteners and drawer slides. Speckled hardware, drawers that scrape instead of gliding, and stainless that has gone dull rather than clean. Fasteners are usually the first thing to fail and the last thing anyone looks at.
- Undersides and fascia panels. Rust streaks running down from under a counter, or a panel that has rusted from the inside out. Water is being held against the metal somewhere.

- Anything indoors that was moved outdoors. Standard indoor appliances rust out within a couple of seasons outdoors. That is a design limit, not a maintenance failure.
Why it happens here
- The rating of the metal. 304-grade stainless resists corrosion best and is the standard for coastal areas, while powder-coated steel costs less but chips and rusts where scratched. For wet climates, spend the extra 20 to 30 percent on stainless - and where airborne salt is part of the local picture, that calculation is not optional. - Leaving it uncovered. Appliances left uncovered in direct sun lose their finish and seals within a few years, and covers rated for UV exposure are inexpensive insurance. Weigh those against the lifespan numbers. A framed island with a poured concrete counter is expected to last 15 years, modular stainless cabinets with a stone top 20 years, masonry block with a stucco finish 25 years, and stone veneer masonry with a granite counter 30 years - so the material you replace rusty components with sets the next 15 to 30 years, not the next season.
